This is a book about two 'companions' from Yorkshire, Nigel Sorley
and Isaac Aldington and whose lives became overshadowed by The First
World War.
Nigel joined an Infantry battlion, but Isaac stayed behind. The book
is about their relationship, it's about The Somme Offensive and the
letters home which contain depictions of the immemorial cruelties of war. 'Those
more precious that one can say. They do not die gracefully. They do
not lie like any portrait could depict them. If lucky, they are bleak and bloody
carrion, piled one atop the other and to be carried away on carts...'
The reader is taken into the experience of trench warfare, where Nigel gets killed.

Here is a piece of the story. An excerpt (abridged) from a letter sent home:
Lance Corporal Lewis, I touched where his jaw was smashed
apart. The stretcher bearers couldn't get to him at first. Now....Now, he's
something else, the poor bastard. The others, I pity the others too: The
fallen. The bayonetted to death. The alive and folded in agony, their splattered
flesh that kissed the earth. The castrated pals. The heads flying through the air, still screaming. The maniac, jagged and savage
hatred. The wheels passing over their gaping mouths. The eerie, fixed eyes. The yonder caughing
mines tearing limbs from men. The bodies being ripped
to bleeding pieces. The huddled, trembling and fettered fear. The crying and scurrying
away. The many limbs aflame. The choking and spitting fire. The cursing. The
burning pins. The shrieking. The mocking. The contempt. The raining of spilled
entrails. The citadels of agony. The unceasing jabbing of bayonets. The blades.
The bleeding throats. The made blind. The drifting and stinking smoke. The many butchered and maggot infested boys.
The many, many butchered boys. The bombing and rapid fire. The sucking mud and the
blood-clotted slime. The rain. The rain. The rain. The rats. The poisoned air. The vomit strewn
grapple. The strength of that quivvering, barbed wire. The piercing and
slashing of faces. The grimaces. The paralysis. The frenzy.
The frenzy in killing. The enemy around us! Die! Die! Die!...
